intense colors

Elements of painting like composition and color rely on an artist's intuitive understanding. We all recognize when composition or color works, but it is difficult to explain exactly why.

I have been building my palette for a number of years. I feel that the bold colors I choose are important for both expressing a certain emotional intensity within my landscapes, but also in exposing the underlying shapes that are essential to its composition.

To this end, I try to look at color as independent elements separate from the actual subject. Indeed, this abstraction of real-world subjects is exactly what makes paintings such an important experience for both the artist and the viewer.

Landscape Myths

September 2008

I have begun a series of paintings exploring how myths are attached to the landscape, and subsequently how those myths influence human patterns of land use. In Oxbow Revised and Paradise Lost, I contrast these ideas against classic Hudson River School paintings.

Juniper Brushworks Ends

March 2008

Painting under the alias of Juniper Brushworks has ended. I've decided it more important to continue my painting under my own name: Indeed, it is how I sign my paintings. Juniper Brushworks will continue as a web design service.
